November 2026 Monthly Newsletter e-mail

Jane Dean | Published on 11/1/2026

Hello Friends,

Welcome November. It’s a month of transitioning from Fall into Winter and is often overlooked. Stores start promoting Halloween in the summer and then jump straight to Christmas, bypassing Thanksgiving completely. Regardless of retailers’ agendas, I find November a great time to pause and reflect before getting into the hustle and bustle of the holidays. It’s a time to appreciate what we have and I, for one, am so grateful for the Black Run Preserve and so thankful to all of you who help us take care of it all year long.

Speaking of transitions, our software migration was a great success. We are still learning all of the new features, but we feel we made the right choice. If you are a member and have not done so already, please visit our website and click on “Member Login” to log in. Thank you so much for bearing with us as we all learn how to best utilize this new system.

While you are exploring the new website, be sure to hit the Newstab to learn about our efforts to protect the headwaters of the Black Run Preserve. Along with the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, Rancocas Conservancy and the Pinelands Alliance, we have launched a campaign to raise funds for the soft costs of the 835-acre land acquisition that is adjacent to the current BRP. And we are delighted to announce that a generous donor has committed $10,000 in matching grants for every gift over $100 that is received. You can make a donation conveniently online, in person at any of our upcoming events, or by check made out to New Jersey Conservation Foundation (indicate Black Run Headwaters in the memo line).

November Events

If, unlike me, you enjoy getting a jump on the holiday season, then our Juried Photography and Art Exhibition presents an excellent opportunity to pick up some fantastic gifts for the nature lovers in your life. Come see the show at our Meet the Artists and Awards Reception on Saturday, November 7,1pm - 4pm at the Perkins Center for the Arts (123 S. Elmwood Rd., Marlton). All the photos and artwork are inspired by or captured in the Black Run Preserve, making them a special way to share something that’s particularly meaningful in your life. We will have light refreshments, announce the winners and give away raffle prizes. We’ll also answer any questions you have about the headwaters initiative andthe first eight donors of $150 or more will receive a limited edition signed print as a giftfrom the estate of renowned Pinelands photographer Albert Horner. If you cannot attend the reception, but would like to see the show or purchase a piece, the art center will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-4pm and our exhibition runs from October 25 through December 9. A portion of the proceeds of all sales benefits our organization and mission.

Please RSVP for the reception on our website

We have the perfect hike for those looking to slow down and take in the forest atmosphere. Join us on Saturday, November 14 at the Kettle Run Road East Trailhead, 10am-noon, for a bit of Forest Bathing (AKA Shinrin Yoku). We will take a short mindful walk in the woods and enjoy taking part in brief guided invitations that will re-awaken your senses to the rejuvenating benefits of nature.

Finally, we will have a Turkey Trek hike on Sunday, November 22,10am-noon, at the Kettle Run Road East Trailhead. We will engage in some cardiovascular exercise before the big meal and share our gratitude for the beauty of the Black Run Preserve by taking a brisk walk through the fall scenery of the preserve. We will be hiking 3.5-4 miles in two hours with some stops.

I am going to leave you with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson to remind us to slow down and appreciate the people and things we have in our lives. “Nature never hurries. Atom by atom, little by little, she achieves her work”.

I hope to see you out on the trails or at one of our events!
